"Former Cal State East Bay standout Gabe Kindred has joined the University of Nevada men's basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant under head coach Eric Musselman for the 2015-16 season.
"I'm truly grateful for the opportunity that Coach Musselman has given me," Kindred said. "Nevada has a great basketball tradition that I'm honored to be a part of. I'm very excited to get to work with the players and coaching staff."
Kindred transferred to CSUEB after one year each at Division I Loyola Chicago and Salt Lake Community College. He played two seasons for the Pioneers and led the team in scoring both years. As a senior in 2013-14, Kindred led the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in made free throws (154), and he ranked in the top five in scoring (16.0 ppg) and three-point percentage (.456).
The Oakland native scored 728 career points for the Pioneers. He holds program records for free throws made in a season (154) and in a single game (16-for-16). He also finished his career ranked seventh in school history with a free throw percentage of .751.
After completing his eligibility, Kindred stayed on with the Pioneers as an assistant coach under Gus Argenal for the 2014-15 season. This fall, he was accepted into the Master's program for Educational Leadership at Nevada.
"Gabe was one of the best guards to ever play at Cal State East Bay and holds multiple records, but the most lasting footprints he left were his passion and leadership as both a player and coach," said Argenal. "He is a special competitor who will be a star in the coaching profession. I am lucky to call him a friend, and he will always be part of the Pioneer family."
"The East Bay brotherhood is something I will always cherish," Kindred added. "I can't thank Coach Argenal, the staff, and my teammates enough for the positive impact they've had on me and my development as a person."
Nevada posted a record of 9-22 in the tough Mountain West Conference in 2014-15. This upcoming season will be the program's first under Musselman, who spent last year as the Associate Head Coach at LSU. He also has 23 years of experience in the professional ranks, including stints as head coach of the Golden State Warriors (2002-04) and Sacramento Kings (2006-07)."
