A take on Saturday's Nor Cal Summer Preview

Caught Gerry Freitas' Nor Cal Summer Preview, the tuneup for the rest of the summer, on Saturday. Here are some stream-of-consciousness scribblings:

Keep it in mind that not every team was viewed and some talents were certainly missed:

* Caught the Bay Area Hoosiers (BAH) and Noah Allen plus Elliott Pitts were displaying the usual but the most intriguing Hoosier was a newcomer in 6-foot-9 Israel Gutierrez, a 2012 frontcourt prospect out of Mexico. He's a bit lean but very mobile, willing and able to play inside. Possessing a 7-foot-1 wingspan and with just four years of organized basketball playing experience, college coaches should have BAH Coaches Rob Jones and Phil Doherty on speed dial but he is seriously checking out prep schools ... 

* With the Nor Cal Pharoahs, 6-foot-3 Cole (2013 Pleasant Grove) Nordquist and 6-foot-7 Tyler (Folsom High) Hatten showed as prospects. Loved the form on Nordquist's shot and the fact that he didn't try to force the action. Seeing Hatten was a first-time opportunity and he showed a solid face-the-basket mid-range jumper. Don't know if he is still sprouting upward (more than likely) but he's looking like a late bloomer prospect to keep tabs on ...

* N-O-B-O-D-Y plays harder or more physical than the Oakland Rebel Red (ORR) squad, a product of the coach being Raymond Young ...  liked the ease of ORR's  6-foot Joey (2014 Newark Memorial) Frenchwood's shooting motion and the fact that he was very accurate on his catch-and-shoot attempts ... 6-foot-5 Derrick (2014 Castro Valley) Clayton also had his moments but needs to demonstrate greater consistency in effecting the game, something he obviously still has time to do ... Another 2014 talent, 6-foot-6 Temidayo (St. Joseph Notre Dame) Yussuf, plays strong but three more inches of height will greatly enhance his level of recruiting ...

* Loved the play of a pair of 2014 Bay Area Warrior and St. Ignatius backcourters in 5-foot-9 Jalen Yang and 5-foot-11 Nick Aronce-Camp. The extremely quick Yang ran the show, dribble-driving and delivering passes to teammates in scoring position as well as ball-hawking opponents defensively -- he and Trevor Dunbar should cause major problems for backcourt opponents. Aronce-Camp appeared very steady and self-assured for his age ...

* Regarding 707's Finest, 6-foot Matthew (2013 Pleasant Grove) Hayes is such a sweet shooter, able to quickly get off his shot from a standstill as well as in catch-and-shoot situations while 6-foot-3 point Leon (Vanden High) Williams is unruffle-able (if there is such a word) as he surveys the court, makes his choices and proceeds where he wishes like a commander-in-chief
